A San Antonio neighborhood was rocked by two powerful home explosions just hours apart on Wednesday evening, leaving five people hospitalized, including three in critical condition.
According to fire officials, the first explosion occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Preston Hollow Drive. While emergency crews were still on scene responding to the initial blast, a second home ignited and exploded around 8 p.m., creating an even more dangerous situation for responders and residents nearby.
Authorities confirmed that all five victims were transported to area trauma centers with burn injuries. The severity of the situation prompted immediate evacuations, with approximately 10 homes cleared—five on each side of the street—as well as additional nearby residences.
Fire officials described both explosions as “very similar,” with significant structural damage reported. Debris, including insulation and sheetrock, was scattered across the street, highlighting the force of the blasts, which residents say could be felt up to two miles away.
Emergency crews worked through heavy rain as they secured the area. Power was cut to the neighborhood, and utility teams coordinated with CPS Energy to shut off gas lines and assess potential leaks. While the explosions are believed to be gas-related, the exact cause remains under active investigation.
Residents displaced by the blasts were relocated to a nearby senior center for shelter, as officials emphasized that the area is not yet safe for return. Some residents attempted to go back for pets, but authorities have restricted access until the scene is fully secured.
Fire crews remained on-site overnight, continuing to monitor conditions and ensure the safety of the surrounding community as investigations proceed.
